Tribute to Yale professor Stuart B. Schwartz
Also in May, USP honored Yale professor Stuart B. Schwartz, a historian with a long-standing focus on Brazil, for his contributions to the field and his mentorship of Brazilian historians. The tribute took place on May 13, 2024, at the History Department of the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages, and Human Sciences (FFLCH-USP).

The session featured discussions led by scholars from universities in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro, reflecting on Schwartz’s impact on Brazilian historiography. Over his 50-year career, Schwartz has collaborated with Brazilian academics on conferences, postdoctoral research, and joint projects. His work has provided new insights into colonial slave societies in Portuguese America, Spanish America, and the Caribbean.
Visit by Yale School of Nursing Assistant Dean of Research
In December, professor Xuehong Zhang from the Yale School of Nursing visited USP’s Agency of National and International Cooperation (Aucani). The visit focused on identifying shared research interests and exploring opportunities for collaboration between faculty members at the two institutions.
Professor Zhang’s research encompasses public health and clinical medicine, with a focus on gastrointestinal disease prevention, improving clinical care quality, and promoting health equity. During his visit to USP, he met with key faculty members including professor Ana Luiza Vilela Borges from USP’s School of Nursing, who specializes in sexual and reproductive health, and professor Carla Aparecida Arena Ventura from the Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing, whose work focuses on mental health policies and global health perspectives. The visit facilitated the exchange of research priorities and laid the groundwork for future collaborations.

These events in 2024 highlight the continued progress in the Yale-USP partnership and the potential for deeper collaboration in the coming years.
