Americans, Canadians & Australians Will Be Able to Enter Brazil Visa-Free Until April 2024

Passport holders of the US, Canada, and Australia will continue to be able to enter Brazil visa-free as the latter has decided to postpone the reintroduction of tourist visa requirements until April 2024.

This is the second time that Brazil has postponed the reintroduction of requirements to obtain tourist visas for citizens of the US, Canada, and Australia, with the authorities saying that visa-free entry will only be possible until April 10, VisaGuide.World reports.

Brazil’s tourist visa requirements were set to enter into force on January 4, 2024. However, as part of the country’s plan to help its travel and tourism industry, the Brazilian government decided to make a three-month postponement.

The tourist visa requirement for Americans, Canadians, and Australians was dropped in 2019 with the decision of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Back then, Bolsonaro said that by dropping the visa requirement, the country aimed to attract more tourists to the country.

Nonetheless, despite Brazil’s move, the three countries continued to require visas for citizens of Brazil.

As the Associated Press explains, Brazil requires visas based on principles of historical reciprocity and equal treatment.

The tourist visa requirement was initially postponed by the government on October 1. The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, set January 10, 2024 as the new deadline until the last announcement regarding the latest postponement was made.

Last week, the President announced that the country is still working on finalising the new visa system. In order to avoid implementing the new system during a time when movement from and to the three countries is very high and to attract more tourists, the country decided to keep the current rules in place until April.

As soon as the new scheme starts applying, Americans, Canadians, and Australians visiting Brazil will have to apply for a visa, with qualified applicants having the option of an e-visa.

Currently, the visa fee is around $80 and once obtained, the document remains valid for a period of ten years.

While citizens of the US, Canada, and Australia can enter Brazil without the need to undergo the visa process, the case is not the same for citizens of tens of countries.

When applying for a Brazil Visa, applicants must submit several documents. They are required to submit their passport, their fully completed application form, a round-trip ticket, proof of sufficient funds, and proof of having secured accommodation, among others.
